History, Mission and Philosophy

About Mariner Youth Soccer

Built on Tradition. Focused on Growth.

Mariner Youth Soccer was founded in 1978 with a clear mission: to foster, promote, and advance the game of soccer across the South Coast.

In 1982, Mariner launched its Spring Travel Program, competing in the South Coast Soccer League. By 1984, the organization expanded to serve the communities of Acushnet, Fairhaven, Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester — a structure that continues today.

For more than four decades, Mariner has been a cornerstone of soccer in the South Coast community. Generations of players have developed their skills, built friendships, and learned discipline, resilience, and teamwork through the game.

Today, Mariner is not standing still. We are building the next era of South Coast soccer.

Our Mission

Mariner Youth Soccer uses the game of soccer to provide structured, competitive, and development-focused opportunities for youth and adults in our communities.

We are committed to:

  • Excellence in player development

  • Strong fundamentals and intelligent play

  • Good sportsmanship and integrity

  • Competitive pathways for those who seek them

  • Character development that extends beyond the field

Our programs strengthen families, promote active lifestyles, and encourage volunteer leadership across the South Coast.

Our Philosophy

Player development and enjoyment of the game sit at the center of everything we do.

We develop confident, creative players who are comfortable attacking, defending, and making smart decisions under pressure. Players are encouraged to express themselves and take calculated risks as they grow.

Mistakes are part of development. Effort, resilience, and accountability are non-negotiable.

Development is intentional. Success is earned.

Five Pillars of Player Development

Our player pathway is built on five foundational pillars:

Technical
Mastery of passing, dribbling, turning, shooting, defending, and heading (age-appropriate).

Tactical
Quick, intelligent decision-making with and without the ball.

Physical
Development of coordination, balance, speed, agility, and overall athletic performance.

Social
Learning to lead, communicate effectively, and contribute positively as part of a team.

Mental
Processing information under pressure, managing emotions, solving problems, and demonstrating resilience in both victory and defeat.

Expanding Opportunity. Building Community.

Mariner continues to grow beyond the traditional youth soccer model.

Our programs include recreational, travel, and competitive pathways designed to support players at every stage of development. We are also expanding access through initiatives such as TOPSoccer, providing an inclusive soccer experience for athletes with disabilities.

Mariner Youth Soccer is proud of its history.
We are even more focused on where we are going next.
