Mariner Youth Soccer

History, Mission and Philosophy

History
Mariner Youth Soccer was founded in 1978.  Mariner began as a recreational program whos’ mission was to foster, promote and advance the cause of soccer in the South Coast.  In 1984 MYS moved into its current form, serving the townships of Acushnet, Fairhaven, Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester.  Our spring travel program began in 1982 and competes in the South Coast Soccer League. For the last 44 years, Mariner has been a staple of soccer in the South Soast community, providing opportunities for countless youth and adults to play and enjoy the beautiful game of soccer.

Mission
Our mission is to use the game of soccer to provide inclusive opportunities for the youth and adults of the townships within Mariner in a safe and fun environment at both recreational and competitive levels. Our values foster the principles of team play, good sportsmanship, fairness and the advancement of individual players’ ability within the team concept and ultimately contribute to the overall character of the youth we serve.   Our programs also aim to strengthen our community by promoting active lifestyles and volunteerism.

Philosophy

Player Development and players enjoying their soccer is at the core of our philosophy.  We feel that developing creative players with comfortable attacking and defending attributes and freedom of expression is vital.  Players need to be encouraged to express themselves without fear of failure.  Players should never be discouraged from trying new things or criticized if they make mistakes.

5 PILLARS TO PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Technical - Players that have efficient abilities in passing, dribbling,
turning, shooting, defending and heading (when applicable)
Tactical - Having the ability to make quick, good decisions with and without the ball
Physical - To develop coordination, balance, speed, quickness and agility
Social - Understanding how to be a good teammate and work well with others.
Mental - The ability to process information on the field, find a solution to a situation, manage emotions and have dignity in a win or loss.
